“Unable to hold on to anything on the sub’s exterior as it rolled, the lone crew member lost his footing and slipped, sliding along the smooth, curved surface of the sub and headlong into the water. That must have hurt. I stuck my head above the surface and watched the scene play out. Though the hatch was still open, no other crew member came up through the hatch. The head of another crewmember did eventually pop up, but still no one came to the aid of the fallen sailor. Some of the seawater pelting the submarine made its way to the hatch and poured in. Over the howl of the wind and wave action, I could hear someone barking orders. The crew would need to think fast if they had any chance of saving their comrade.“
