“A large adult took a stab at the narrow channel where I lay patiently. It came down to within ten feet of my snout. This male orca was much larger than me, and its enormous head dwarfed mine. The beast exuded unbridled ferocity. Despite the darkness I could see its head sticking out below the dust cloud, and I realized that it could see me clearly, but there was no way for it to approach, as my gaping jaws were clearly in the way and the opening in the rock was far too narrow for the large beast to penetrate. It attempted to bite at the surrounding rock, to enlarge the opening. Small rocks tumbled into the depths as it rubbed its white teeth against the wall. I thought I heard it groan in frustration.”
